Characters / Avio Nubiva
"Come on, a little adventure never hurts!"
Avio is a risk-loving scavenger working alongside Hiro and Medusoid to gather scrap. As of right now, he lives in Madouk's secret bunker on Ataraxia. As the last living Crevolan, he’s surely an interesting one - a member of a species once known for culture built almost entirely around flight itself... So it’s rather ironic that Avio’s wings are undersized, leaving him unable to fly like the rest of his kind.
He’s painfully aware of his predicament, and it weighs on him. He struggles with self-worth, and often feels like dead weight due to his wings. He's desperate to prove he can contribute well, so he compensates with persistence, recklessness, and a “fake it till you make it” attitude that often gets him - and his crew - into trouble.
Personality
Avio is someone who struggles to even sit still. Stupidly brave, impulsive, and always looking for an opportunity to do Something. He’s confident to a fault, often leaping into danger before anyone can stop him. He does have a certain cleverness that can be useful sometimes, though most of the time it's more of an implusive nature that always somehow works out for him... The universe favors the idiots, I guess.
Mischief is something that, most of the time, is just too hard for him to say no to. He loves testing boundaries, and the more he gets away with, the more he’s encouraged to press on. He may poke at things even when it’s obviously a bad idea, yet somehow he’s still here today, alive and well… though, the consequences of his poking and prodding are definitely visible, considering the amount of visible scars on him.
He’s very protective and caring toward those he loves, even if his way of showing it can be overwhelming - He nudges people out of their comfort zones with the best intentions, believing that a little discomfort will help them grow, though he often pushes too hard without realizing and comes off very bothersome as a result. Despite Avio being such an annoyance, he does have a good heart and pure intentions.
Appearance
Avio is a fairly fit Crevolan, leaner and more muscular than most. That’s mostly thanks to his constant restlessness... seriously, this guy does not know how to sit still. He’s always bouncing all over the place.
Physically, Avio is a quadrupedal, feathered creature, reminiscent of a canid. His body is covered in feathers of varying lengths, with the most notable being the bright orange feathers on his head, ankles, and tail tip. His eyes are pure white, as Crevolans have compound eyes - similar to those of arthropods - while also lacking pseudopupils, giving them a pretty unique look. As mentioned before, Avio’s wings are undersized, seemingly due to some kind of birth defect that halted their growth his beyond early childhood.
As his main outfit, he sports a light brown and off-white jacket, along with some beige pants to match. He has a bit of a fashion sense going... though it's actually unintentional, as he prefers function over form and he probably just got the matching clothing in some bargain deal or whatever. He's also always seen wearing his red scarf, as it's a cherished item of his, seeing as it's something his mother gave to him.
Backstory
From the first moment he could remember, Avio roamed the galaxy with his mother, Kalon. He was her only cub, and a treasured one, at that. Before settling down, Kalon and her partner, Corusca, had been adventurers, carving their names into all sorts of dangerous places, with a pile of highly-sought-after artifacts to show for it - but when they finally tried to start a family, years passed without success. No fertile egg clutches… Sometimes not even an egg clutch to begin with… until one fateful night.
The two were candling a recently-laid clutch of eggs, finding almost all of them to be empty and losing hope yet again. They checked the very last egg, and to their shock, they spotted the shadow of a developing cub inside. They were ecstatic! ...but sadly, their joy didn't get to last long.
A couple weeks pass, and a mysterious force launches an attack on Mesaigne, with hopes for takeover. The Crevolans fought with everything they had, but they were quickly becoming overwhelmed. Amid the chaos, Kalon lost her partner, and was running out of time to hide - So she hotwired an enemy fighter ship, packed up her only egg and whatever belongings she could carry, and fled into space - hoping to wait out the storm.
When she returned, the Mesaigne she once knew was gone, with entire cities left in ruin after so little time... And so Kalon concluded that she and her unborn child might be the last Crevolans in the galaxy. From that moment on, she decided nothing would ever come between her and her family again. She would raise Avio as an adventurer, just like her - someone who could survive if something so horrid were to happen again.
Soon enough, Avio hatched healthy, but with noticeably underdeveloped wings.. though, Kalon didn’t care. She loved him nonetheless, and did her best to accommodate for this. They wandered the stars together, and she taught him nearly every trick of her trade - how to hunt for relics, how to read danger before it came, and how to always be sure that he made it out alive. What his wings lacked, her guidance made up for - and despite being just a kid, Avio kept up surprisingly well - this was his whole life, after all.
But the Galactic Dying was always looming, and with time, it crept uncomfortably close.
Kalon, aging and afraid, made a desperate move. She began to wear the Collar of Chronicle - one of the few artifacts she managed to save from her home so many years ago, and one that granted immense strength, but would twist the wearer’s mind, turning them slowly more aggressive and feral-minded. She hoped she could resist its effects long enough to protect her son, the soon-to-be last living legacy of their kind.
As Avio entered his teenage years, Kalon began to change. It started with confusion, paranoia, and strange sentences that didn’t make sense, and were never explained.. These episodes grew worse - more frequent, more strangely hostile beneath the surface… until the mother he knew seemed to slip away entirely.
Then, one night, she was gone. No note. No trail.. Just… gone.
With no one left to guide him, Avio did the only thing he knew how to do - he kept moving. He picked up where she left off - chasing adventure, hunting relics, surviving with the skills she gave him. If there was any way to honor her, it was to carry on her legacy.. and maybe, somehow, he could find her again, somewhere out there…
Trivia
- He knows how to pick locks, and does so pretty well, but he'll typically just kick down doors because he thinks it's more fun. He'll typically only pick the lock if he's tired or in an actually-super-seriously-sneaky situation.
- He goes out for a run in the deserts of Ataraxia every sunset, with hopes of getting out any remaining energy before bedtime.
- It works well... usually. If it doesn't work, he usually ends up staying up all night fixating really hard on some random task while everyone else sleeps.
- He loudly and proudly tells the stories of each one of his scars, especially if the scars are brought up with intent of mocking him.
- Madouk gave him top bunk in his and Hiro's bedroom, but Avio chose to sleep in a hammock adjacent to the beds instead. He likes feeling like the vent is rocking him to sleep...shhh..dont tell anyone..
- He has a bad habit of trying to jump any gap he thinks he can jump, and just barely makes it every time.
- He enjoys messing with Medusoid in just about any way possible, as he thoroughly enjoys the thrill of angering something so dangerous.. and running away when she tries to shoot him.... Why is he still alive.....
- The dinky little ship that him and Hiro fly around in is, in fact, the same one that Avio's mom stole all those years ago.
